Michael Lappin who is a vet and known as “the golden retriever guy,” began his career, Golden retrievers used to live a whole generation with some families. However, he noticed that their lifespans have gotten shorter over the years. After many years of experience, Lappin came up with a discovery where he mentioned that the death rate has been increasing in the past few years and many of the golden retrievers he treats are getting cancer and not living past 13.

In the vet community, it’s widely agreed that golden retrievers have a high rate of cancer compared to other dog breeds. But Lappin’s claims that they’re dying younger have faced some resistance. To find out why this is happening, he put his own pets in a study. According to them main reason for early death is cancer. The percentage of cancer is higher in retrievers than in other breeds.

Despite Lappin’s claims, an old study from 1982 in the American Journal of Veterinary Research shows that golden retrievers had even shorter lifespans back in the day. The study looked at more than 2000 dogs from 1962 to 1976, and while the average age of death for 33 golden retrievers was around 6.7 years, individual cases could affect this average.
