Mona Lisa Was Once Stolen Earlier
The Mona Lisa painting is the most expensive artwork at a reported $860 million, so, it is unlikely for the globe to stay silent when a masterpiece like this is being stolen. So, the claim seems to be fake as of now.
Louvre has also not announced any such thing, so it is confirmed that the news that is currently trending online is fake.
Though Mona Lisa is currently safe, it was once stolen in 1911. An Italian artist and Louvre worker Vicenzo Peruggia committed the theft by hiding in the museum until the closing hour. He later took the artwork and hid it for more than 2 years.
He was caught and imprisoned after he tried to sell the artwork to a Florence art dealer in his native country. The deal however failed as the dealer communicated it to Uffizi Gallery and the artist was arrested by the police. The artwork was later returned to the Louvre in 1913.
After being arrested Peruggia was sentenced to seven months in jail. He later passed away at the age of 44 in 1925.
