A team of French scientists has revived a Zombie virus in Russia and the virus claim to have been trapped for more than 50,000 years in a Siberian frozen lake. Here is more from this latest research study.
As per the research team the large parts of the permafrost covering over one-quarter of the Northern Hemisphere are melting at a rapid speed due to global warming. Following this permafrost thaw, several organic materials are released and are entering into the water.
A recent research study conducted by a team of French scientists has revealed some jaw-dropping findings. The research was conducted to study a ‘zombie virus’, which has been trapped deep in the waters of a frozen Siberian lake for almost 50,000 years.
The study has revealed that following the issues like global warming the increased global temperatures are causing vast swathes of permafrost to melt. In return to it, organic material that has been frozen for up to a million years is released and enters the water.
Here is more about what the Zombie Virus is and how it can be harmful for plants, animals and humans.
French Scientists Have Revived A 50000 Old Zombie Virus In Russia
The thawing frost used to contain several organic elements trapped in it, however as it has started melting at a rapid pace, it has become a matter of concern.
The researchers believe that a part of this released organic material is a ‘zombie virus’ of 48,500 years old. This new virus is being given the name pandoravirus yedoma.
Researchers have conducted researches on ‘preliminary characterizations of 13 viruses isolated from seven ancient Siberian permafrost samples, one sample is being taken from the Lena river and another from cryosol – mineral soil formed in a permafrost environment – in Kamchatka’.
As the study is being shared online, several internet users are stunned to find out about a virus like this.
Researchers Have Warned About The New Zombie Virus From Prehistorical Times
This current viral study is conducted under the supervision of microbiologist Jean-Marie Alempic, from the French National Center For Scientific Research. The team comprises several scientists from Russia, Germany and France.
Here is what the study has to say about the findings:
“Due to climate warming, irreversibly thawing permafrost is releasing organic matter frozen for up to a million years, most of which decompose into carbon dioxide and methane, further enhancing the greenhouse effect”.
It further added, “Part of this organic matter also consists of revived cellular microbes (prokaryotes, unicellular eukaryotes) as well as viruses that remained dormant since prehistorical times.”
The scientists have talked about the dangers associated to this virus. They have claimed that the “revival of an ancient unknown virus” can be disastrous for all living beings including plants and animals on the planet.
The study further reports, “It is therefore legitimate to ponder the risk of ancient viral particles remaining infectious and getting back into circulation by the thawing of ancient permafrost layers,”.
The study is making rounds on the internet and several social media users have talked about its potential risks.
The Outside reported the news on their official Twitter handle saying, “Officials are warning of a “zombie virus,” long-frozen bugs that haven’t been released into the population for many centuries, could pose a public health risk as the world experiences unprecedented thaws.”
This is not the first time this team of researchers has reported an alien virus. The team has found another 30,000-year-old virus trapped in permafrost in north-eastern Siberia earlier.
Besides this, earlier in June 2021, a team of Russian researchers have found ‘zombie’ worms in the Arctic. These Zombie worms were trapped inside the frost for more than 24000 years.
