The fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons has introduced a new campaign which is known as Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden. In this latest adventurer, its heroes face the terror and danger of the frozen tundra, experience new monsters, and have the chance to explore the long-forgotten magical city.
It continues Dungeons and Dragons’ latest trend of taking a familiar location, giving it the fifth edition make over. Also dropping the low-level heroes into the mix, and thus devising an amazing new adventure.
When we talk about Icewind Dale Rime of the Forstmaiden levels, it will take players from level 1 to 12 in an icy land filled with amazing mysteries.
What is Special About Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden?
Well, it is a story of dark terror that revisits the forlom, flaming candlelights of civilization and sheds light on the many bone-chilling locations. These locations surround the Frontier settlements of the frozen north. Although it seems a great campaign and it will not be that much difficult to run.
According to Dungeons and Dragons’ Lead writer Chris Perkins, a key theme of Icewind Dale is isolation, and that at the time of publication, due to the global pandemic this is a very familiar theme to many.
Furthermore, this is a significant inclusion and it shows an understanding of how roleplaying games like these can impact the players. Interestingly, it serves as a strong warning to all out there, that this is a horror-themed and it can cause terror, anxiety, and tension for the players.
Why Icewind Dale Should be your Next Dungeons and Dragons Campaign?
People who think why should they go for the Icewind Dale, here are the top five reasons that this new adventure should be your next D&D campaign.
Character Secrets
Like other campaigns of D&D which came before, this adventure has useful sections for developing your characters before the start of the campaign. Each background in the Player’s Handbook has a ‘Hook’ to tie them to Icewind Dale.
Well, your players use these secret characters depends on the individual playlist. Some will protect these secrets for the whole campaign. Some will wait for the appropriate time to reveal these secrets. And even some will show the secrets before the campaign begins.
Ten Towns
Icewind Dale is the name of the Northern region of the forgotten realms, which is just above the Sword Coast. It is a big and lightly populated region, that its entire population is located within ten small towns which are called Ten Towns.
Therefore, the campaign can begin in any one of these towns, and each comes with its starting mission. And also these towns are perfect locations to start any D&D campaign.
Horror
Icewind Dale tends to capture the sense of foreboding and dread which was also in the “Curse of Strahd”. Tomb of Anhiliation tied down the jungle survival aspects, and “Out of the Abyss” has certainly tried to send your player characters mad. But Rime of the Frostmaiden is the first to take successfully all the three aspects and merge them to give better experience.
This campaign includes Mindflayer Gnomes, Zombie Gnolls, Icy Giant Ghosts, and there are plenty of unexpected monsters that are new in the edition.
Dungeons and Dragons
In this adventure, you will find plenty of both Dungeons and Dragons. The exploration features of Rime of the Frostmaiden are broad. They’re really in a sense of players exploring the wilds around the Icewind Dale.
