Amid the news of Donald Trump’s joining Meta platforms again, Netizens are curious to know why former president Donald Trump was banned from Facebook and Instagram. If you are among these social media users, here is everything you need to know.
Why Was Donald Trump Banned From Facebook And Instagram?
Donald Trump was banned from the major Meta platforms (Facebook and Instagram) following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Referring to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, the Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement revealing Donald Trump’s ban.
A Tweet shared from Mark Zuckerberg’s personal handle on January 7, 2021, read, “The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor”.
He further added, “We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great”.
Referring to this statement Nick Clegg further said, “We took action in what was extreme and highly unusual circumstances.”
Considering the statement from Mark Zuckerberg, Meta banned former president Donald Trump. They revealed that Trump would be banned on Facebook “indefinitely” but at least “until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
Later in June 2021, Meta announced that Trump would be banned for two years following the January 6 Capitol attack. It means that the two-year period is about to end and the former president will be reconsidered by January 2023, this month.
Several assessments are made by Meta to check whether the risk of having Trump reinstated on the platform has receded or not. Following these assessments, they have come to the conclusion that the risk has finally receded. So, there are chances that we might have Donald Trump back on Facebook and Instagram.
Meta was not the only social media platform to ban the former prime minister. Following this, Trump Decided to make his own social media platform which was named ‘Truth Social’. This social media platform was launched in February 2021 and since then it is the platform of choice for former president Donald Trump.
As of now, it is unclear whether Trump will return to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter or not.
