TikTok users are left confused after the application has sent a notification revealing some Class Action Lawsuit. Users who do not know the back story of this notification are snooping across the internet to understand its meaning. If you are among such users, we have explained the whole story in the proceeding paragraphs.
Well, the story began when TikTok found itself in hot waters in April 2021, after the application was sued for billions for accessing users’ information without their knowledge. The case was pending since then but now it seems like there is a new development in this case. The good news for users is, some of them might be eligible for a cash settlement.
How To File A Claim For Class Action Lawsuit?
As revealed by BBC, the lawsuit filed against TikTok alleged that this entertainment platform has taken personal information of children without their or their guardian’s knowledge. The data they have taken includes the phone numbers, location, and biometric data of young TikTok users.
Alongside TikTok, applications like Muscal.ly, ByteDance, and others are also mentioned in the lawsuit. In reply to these allegations, TikTok responded by saying:
“Privacy and safety are top priorities for TikTok and we have robust policies, processes, and technologies in place to help protect all users and our teenage users in particular. We believe the claims lack merit and intend to vigorously defend the action.”
So far, the court didn’t rule out any decision yet but the parties involved in this lawsuit have decided on a settlement to avoid taking the case to trial.
According to their website, some deductions including attorney’s fees and others have been made from the settlement, the remaining will be shared among class members who have filed for the claim.
Class Action Lawsuit TikTok Explored
As the scenario of this case is being revealed to the users, people are trying to figure out about the users who will be eligible for the settlement.
According to TikTok, Nationwide class and Illionois subclass members are eligible to file a claim. Now, who is included in the Nationwide class and Illionois subclass? Well, people who reside in the State of Illinois and used the App in the state prior to September 30, 2021, come under the Illinois subclass. However, people who reside in the US and had used the App prior to September 30, 2021, come under the nationwide class.
It is believed that people falling in the Illinois subclass are more likely to get higher pay than nationwide. It is because of numerous claims made in the lawsuit.
As soon as the news about this settlement has gone viral Twitter users have started sharing memes about it. One user wrote, “Now why’d I just get a notif about a class action settlement from TikTok”.
Another said, “Quick everybody, go sign up for your $5 from the Tiktok class action lawsuit”.

Though several users are joking about the settlement, TikTok has not issued any statement regarding the settlement as of now.
