It started when a person named “Josh” created a group on Facebook and added several people named “Josh” in the group chat. One of them responded “Because we all share same name”. Then the creator of the group sent a message that read, “Precisely, 4/24/2021, 12:00 PM, meet at these coordinates, (40.8223286, -96.7982002) we fight, whoever wins gets to keep the name, everyone else has to change their name, you have a year to prepare, good luck.”

As soon as the screenshots went viral, meme creators came up with all their energy. Some referred to it as the funniest way to ensure that no one else has the same name as you. Several people reacted to the meme and then it got disappeared from the social media platforms until the trend came back to life as the date mentioned in the meme came near.

The viral “Last Josh Meme” made its way to social media platforms when a twitter user named, @joshswainaz posted a screenshot from Facebook group full of people named Josh Swain on April 24th, 2020. This post became massively popular among the twitter users and it gained 21,000 retweets and 61,000 likes in a year.

Next to this viral Twitter post, a Facebook page named Fun Things With Depressed People reposted the same screenshot on April 26th. On the same day, this similar screenshot was shared to a Reddit subgroup “/r/GoodFakeTexts” by a user known on Reddit as u/JoffaCXD1. It gained over 2,200 upvotes in less than a year.

Spread Of The Meme

The Last Josh Meme started spreading on all social media platforms after April 2020. The screenshot of the Facebook group conversation was then posted by a Facebook page “Abey saley” on April 27th, 2020. On this same day, a famous Instagram meme account named @pubity, posted this screenshot and garnered over 633,000 likes in less than a year.

On that similar day a Reddit user u/Nu1tr4 shared an image macro to a subreddit /r/dankmemes, which featured Abey saley’s Josh Swain screenshot and an added image from The Matrix depicting the fight between the Josh’s.

It garnered over 41,500 upvotes in less than 12 months. Another redditor “u/nailmot0rcycle” posted the same screenshot to subreddit “/r/me_irl”. It racked up more than 59,000 upvotes form the Redditors.

After this, the meme sank on the internet for few months but in January 2021, users again started reminding each other about the due date for Josh’s fight. On January 19th, 2021 a Facebook page “Hey Admin, Sauce Please” posted an image macro of the meme with the caption “Just reminding all of you that we only have a couple more weeks to go until the fight”. This post got 26,000 reactions and 19,000 shares in just three months.
